Super Easy Chalkboard Wall

For months I've been eyeing all the cool chalkboard wall pins on Pinterest. I thought it'd be perfect for our playroom, but they looked too cool to be an easy DIY project. I'm glad I gave it a shot, because this was seriously one of the easiest and cheapest projects I've done in our home.

Super Easy Chalkboard Wall - The kids are going to love this and so are you!

Not only that, it's one of the kids' favorite projects. I often catch them drawing pictures or, in the case of my oldest, writing out his first words.

Basically, if you know how to paint, you can create a chalkboard wall of your own.

Chalkboard Wall Supplies

Valspar Interior Matte Black Chalkboard Paint (Lowe's), $9.98
Small paint roller, $0 (already had on hand)
Paint brush, $0 (already had on hand)
Painters tape, $0 (already had on hand)
Bygel containers and rail (Ikea), $5.96
24-pack chalk (Ikea), $1.99
Total cost: $17.93

Instructions

1. Pick a wall--preferably a smooth one. I started with our textured walls and would definitely rethink my choice if I had to do it over again. The textured walls grind up the chalk pretty quick and make it hard for little hands to write.

2. Tape off any molding, outlets or anything else you don't want painted.

3. Paint. I used two coats of paint, and painted each coat on separate days to give the paint time to dry. I'd say two or more coats are good. Once I was done, I went over the edges with a fine paint brush to even out the lines. I had about half a can of paint left when I was done.

4. Accessorize. I already knew I wanted these baskets from Ikea. I'm glad I picked them up because they were the perfect coverup for the electrical outlet in the middle of our wall.

Super Easy Chalkboard Wall - Every one should have one of these in their home!

That's it! I told you it was easy. One question I've been asked is about the chalk dust on the carpet. So far, it hasn't been too bad. We end up getting more dust from the kids stepping on the chalk than from the writing on the wall. Luckily it comes up pretty easy with the vacuum.

The perfect solution for that extra wall space -- chalkboard wall!!
